UI Testing – Case Study
How do you continuously improve cellular handset performance?
UI Performance Testing
A major cellular network operator was increasingly concerned about customer service calls related to the poor performance of the user interface on some of their cellular handset product offerings. A repeatable, accurate, non-intrusive method for measuring user interface performance and establishing benchmarks for continuous improvement was necessary.
Upon receipt of the RFQ, Device Solutions brainstormed potential solutions and worked closely with the operator to fully understand the specific areas of concern before proposing a simple and cost effective method that met all the demanding test requirements. Device Solutions had to overcome several significant challenges – how to repeatedly test complex, expensive, and sometimes delicate handset prototypes non-invasively and cost effectively .
Device Solutions developed and demonstrated a proprietary, non-invasive test method prior to being awarded the contract. Having won the contract, Device Solutions and client developed a test suite of over 30 specific tests and, armed with data from dozens of handsets, developed performance benchmarks for handset manufacturers from that point forward.
Device Solutions also recommended a cost effective business model for use of the test system which has remained effective for over four years.
Device Solutions uses the proprietary system to test 50 to 60 handsets a year and continuously adds new tests as handset features evolve. The operator has used the metrics from this testing to drive continuous improvement of specific areas of handset UI performance.
